A Quick Guide for Helping to Prevent Infection In Care Homes

Wednesday, January 10, 2018

The Social Care Institute for Excellence (SCIE) has published a new guide: Helping to prevent infection in care homes: a quick guide for managers and staff in care homes.

The guide has been co-produced by the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) and SCIE and is based on NICE’s guideline on Healthcare associated infections: prevention and control in primary and community care and quality standard on infection prevention and control. The guideline and quality standard have been developed to complement the Department of Health’s Code of Practice on the Prevention and Control of Infections.

For people living in care homes, infections can be serious, and in some cases, life-threatening. They can also make existing medical conditions worse. It is therefore vital to take the steps that can help prevent infection occurring. Managers and staff in care homes will find this guide very useful as a reminder of the most important methods of preventing infection.

The guide covers:

  • Hand decontamination
  • Personal protective equipment
  • Sharps
  • Waste disposal
  • Education and information
  • Further information

You can download the guide here or visit their fully interactive web resource Helping To Prevent Infection.
